Gilded-Age Inspired Estate Wedding at Glen Manor House

Portsmouth, Rhode Island

Where to even begin for Alison and Steve’s wedding day?! As someone who went to college in Rhode Island, and then got engaged and married in Newport, it is always so special to have the opportunity to be able to photograph engagements and weddings in the teeny tiny Ocean State. Its beautiful, coastal views and stunning historic buildings just make it all the more incredible. When Alison first reached out to me about shooting her May 2024 wedding at the breathtaking Glen Manor House, I was over the moon. Not only is it a gorgeous venue, but I truly clicked with Alison and Steve right away. They are two of the kindest souls, and we had the best time taking their engagement photos last summer on the Rhode Island coast.

Alison and Steve first met in high school, and reconnected again a few years later! As Alison tells it, “Steve’s older brother and my older sister were friends, so we knew of each other but had never met. When I was a sophomore, I told my sister I was ready for my first boyfriend and she asked who I would be interested in and I said, “I think Steve Joyce is pretty cute.” We dated for a little while in high school, and then reconnected a few years later in college. We met up at a college hockey game one night and both realized we still loved each other. A few months later, we started dating again and have been together ever since.”

These two got engaged in May of 2022 in one of the most magical places in the world — the island of Capri on the Amalfi Coast! I asked Steve how nerve-wracking it was bringing the ring overseas, and though he said that it was definitely not the easiest feat, it was totally worth it. Alison’s stunning engagement ring is a solitaire round cut diamond with a platinum band. “I always knew I wanted a solitaire ring, and loved the classic feel of a round cut diamond. In the fall of 2021, Steve and I were walking through Boston and he brought me to a jeweler store to start looking at rings I would like. The store associate was amazing and ended up working discretely with Steve for the next few months to find the perfect ring. When Steve proposed, it was still a sweet surprise as I hadn’t seen the final ring he chose. I absolutely love and cherish my ring.”

Alison and Steve were searching for venues all over New England when they fell in love with Glen Manor House, largely thanks to its Gilded Age architecture and stunning location on the water. “We love coastal New England, and wanted our wedding to embody that. I also loved the idea of a spring wedding, when nature is starting to bloom in color and everything feels so new and alive. Steve and I knew we wanted a wedding that we could look back on in 20 years and still love the details.”

Glen Manor House was truly the perfect setting to bring their wedding day to life. Although the weather has been unpredictable lately, thankfully we had clear skies and a cool breeze coming in off the water. Alison and Steve opted for a classic and elegant feel, with light-colored florals and sophisticated black tie attire. From start to finish, this celebration was an absolute pleasure to be a part of, and I couldn’t be happier for these two starting this next chapter in their lives together!
